What I do and why I do it.
Featherboard Studios exclusively creates sustainable, eco-friendly, wood products from 100% recycled, local material. As a woodworker, I recognize the importance of choosing to use recycled and reclaimed wood instead of supporting harmful logging industries. Through Featherboard Studios, I’m trying to create awareness around the types of products we purchase. I want to offer another alternative to commonly purchased kitchenware, like cutting boards, charcuterie servers, and wooden utensils. I commit my practice to using only recycled and reclaimed materials to limit my impact on the environment. Sustainability is at the core of my woodworking, specifically utilizing materials that would otherwise go to waste. My boards are unique and one-of-a-kind, in that they’re comprised of recycled fine art frames and exhibition furniture, weaving the fine art world into craft and design. Each cutting board carries a history with it, and the wood frames that once showcased masterful paintings are now being re-purposed into beautiful kitchenware.
How to take care of your new cutting board
Cutting Board Care Instructions: How To Oil and Maintain a Wooden Cutting Board
What You Need:
Clean, soft cloth
Food Grade Mineral Oil- I use a non-petroleum based oil, that is 100% plant-based ingredients with bees wax. My custom blended board butter is available for purchase.
*Important:
Do not soak or submerge the board in water, for this will disrupt the moisture content and cause the seams to split. Wood cutting boards are NOT dishwasher safe. Do not us any kind of cooking oil on your wood cutting board as it will damage the board.
Care Instructions:
1. Start with a cutting board that is as clean as possible and thoroughly dry. It's necessary to oil your cutting board a minimum of once a month (depending on use).
2. Apply the mineral oil, or board butter. Using a clean, soft cloth, apply a small amount of mineral oil in an even layer over the wood. Do this on both sides of your board.
3. Let the oil fully penetrate through the wood fibers overnight, then wipe off any excess oil in the morning. Apply additional oil to any visible dry spots.
5. Remove the excess. If your board feels oily or sticky, buff off any remaining oil with a clean dry cloth or paper towel.
6. Now your cutting board is ready for use!
Fun facts about the benefits of wood cutting boards:
A scientific study conducted by Dr. Dean Cliver, Ph.D has proved that hardwood cutting boards inhibit bacteria growth and are anti-microbial, while plastic boards have been scientifically proven to harbor bacteria inside the cut grooves. Also, wood cutting boards are known to be easier on your expensive knife blades. ClickHere to read more about the study.
